HOW WAS THE VACCINE DEVELOPED?

  • Made from a genetically engineered virus that causes the common cold in chimpanzees
  • Scientists transferred the coronavirus' "spike protein" to the vaccine they were developing 
  • the vaccine resembles the coronavirus & the immune system can learn how to attack it 

DOES THE VACCINE INDUCE ANTIBODIES AND T-CELLS?

  • Levels of T-cells peaked 14 days after vaccination & antibody levels peaked after 28 days
  • 90% of people developed neutralizing antibodies after one dose
  • Only 10 people were given two doses and all of them produced neutralizing antibodies 

IS THE VACCINE SAFE?

  • Yes, but there are side-effects, 70% of people on the trial developed either fever or headache
  • The researchers say this could be managed with paracetamol 

WILL THE TRIALS BE EXPANDED TO OTHER COUNTRIES?

  • Over 10,000 people will take part in the next stage of the trials in the UK
  • But since the levels of coronavirus are low in the UK, Trials will also take place on around 30,000 people in the US as well 2,000 in South Africa & 5,000 in Brazil

WHEN WILL I GET A VACCINE?

  • Even if a vaccine is proven effective before the end of the year,widespread vaccination is likely to be available next year at the earliest
  • Health and care workers & people who are deemed at high risk from Covid-19 due to their age or medical conditions will be prioritised.

HAS ANY OTHER VACCINE CANDIDATE MADE PROGRESS?

  • US company Moderna was first to say that its vaccine can produce neutralizing antibodies
  • BioNtech and pfizer have also had positive results using their RNA vaccine 

HOW MANY VACCINE ARE BEING TESTED?

  • 140 in pre-clinical trials
  • 10 in Phase 1 Small safety trials 
  • 10 in Phase 2 Expanded safety trials 
  • 3 in Phase 3 Wider testing & effectiveness assessed
